Original book title of Histories was Historiae, which is Greek word, originally meant written form of searched knowledge. So reason why Herodotus named his book Historiae, means that he wrote what he searched.
Histories is consisted of 9 books. Book 1~3 explain expansion of Persia, 4~6 explain about Greece nations against Persia, and book 7~9, which is the most important one, explains war between Greece and Persia.
Also, I found some differences/similar things between Histories and Iliad. The most biggest difference is that Histories is written in sentence, but Iliad, was written in poet. Also, Histories is more scientific. Iliad, for example, there are gods fighting each other, also, there are people who is very strong and almost don't die, like Achilles. about similar things between Histories and Iliad, we can find that Histories, is also relying on omens. I think, it is like a limit about Utopia, written by Thomas More, was very advanced at that time, have limit that there is a slave.
About author, Herodotus, there isn't many things known about him. But we can guess something about it. At the beginning, book says 'Herodotus of Harlicarnassus here ..................' which we can find that he is from Harlicarnassus. It is little south from Miletus. Also, he mentions peloponnesos war little, which we can find that he died between 425 BC to 420 BC.
About him, we can find that he searched a lot, because he denies a information of past.
